New Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior watched from the stands as Harry Wilson's fine finish condemned his team to defeat against west London rivals Fulham at Craven Cottage. 08 Jan 2026
Rosenior was not appointed in time to take charge but took a watching brief and may have feared the worst when Marc Cucurella was sent off early on. Chelsea fell behind to Raul Jimenez's header after 55 minutes, but Liam Delap levelled from four yards when the ball bounced back to him off the left post from a corner, after Antonee Robinson almost headed into his own net. With nine minutes remaining, Wilson beat Jorrel Hato with a smart touch just inside the penalty area before half-volleying the ball into the left corner beyond Robert Sanchez. Under the direction of caretaker manager Calum McFarlane, Chelsea had been left with a mountain to climb from the 22nd minute when Cucurella pulled down Wilson and was red-carded for what was judged to be a professional foul. It was Chelsea's eighth dismissal of the season in all competitions, including one for former boss Enzo Maresca who was deemed to be over-celebrating in October after a last-minute winner against Liverpool. There were signs of anger in the away end, with a 'BlueCo out' banner displayed and chants against the ownership as they watched on alongside their new appointment Rosenior. Defeat means Chelsea fall to eighth place in the Premier League, while Fulham join them on 31 points from 21 games.
Holders Barcelona thrashed Athletic Club to reach the Spanish Super Cup final in Saudi Arabia. 08 Jan 2026
The 15-time winners scored four goals in 16 minutes to put the game beyond doubt at half-time. That made Barcelona the first team in history to score four first-half goals in a Spanish Super Cup semi-final. Ferran Torres opened the scoring in the 22nd minute by finishing from close range, before Fermin Lopez hammered a shot into the top corner. Roony Bardghji's fierce strike squirmed under the hands of Athletic Club goalkeeper Unai Simon and Raphinha fired a shot into the roof of the net to give Barcelona an unassailable lead after 38 minutes. Brazilian Raphinha claimed his second goal to make it 5-0 four minutes after the restart with Simon helpless. Barcelona comfortably remained in control to make it nine consecutive victories in all competitions and Hansi Flick's side will face either Atletico Madrid or 13-time winners Real Madrid, who meet on Thursday (19:00 GMT). The final will take place on Sunday in Jeddah after Saudi Arabia and the Spanish Football Federation extended a deal to play the tournament in the country until 2029.
Erling Haaland returned to scoring form with his 150th Manchester City goal - but his side's Premier League title challenge is falling apart, with Brighton holding them to a third consecutive draw. 08 Jan 2026
Pep Guardiola's men have endured an underwhelming start to the year, with poor results and injuries to key players handing the initiative to Arsenal, who could go eight points clear at the top if they beat Liverpool on Thursday. Brighton were looking to capitalise on City's makeshift backline and Pascal Gross found room to thump a header at goal which was clawed out by Gianluigi Donnarumma, with the German unable to convert the follow-up. Georginio Rutter then released Ferdi Kadioglu with a pass from the halfway line, but the Turkey international could only shoot straight at the towering Italian goalkeeper Donnarumma. The Seagulls were exploiting gaps in the opposition defence - Rutter ran clear himself to bear down on goal but was denied by Abdukodir Khusanov's brilliant, last-ditch challenge. But Brighton failed the most of their chances and paid for that as City took a 41st-minute lead. Star man Haaland converted a penalty, and scored the Premier League 35,000th goal since its 1992 inception, after Jeremy Doku was brought down in the box by Diego Gomez – the referee only awarding the spot-kick after reviewing it on the pitchside monitor. Captain Bernardo Silva clipped the post in the second half as the hosts looked to stretch their lead, but Fabian Hurzeler's men hit back through Kaoru Mitoma's lovely finish from the edge of the area. Gomez incredibly missed when picked out by Mitoma a couple of yards from goal, and both sides had to settle for a point.
Amad Diallo starred as defending champions Ivory Coast cruised past Burkina Faso and into the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Morocco. 07 Jan 2026
The Manchester United winger put the Elephants ahead in the 20th minute when he bustled past a couple of defenders and sent a dinked finish past goalkeeper Herve Koffi from close range. Twelve minutes later Amad laid on the second for Yan Diomande, who sent a curling finish past the wrongfooted Koffi from just inside the area. Dango Ouattara came close to pulling one back for the Stallions before the break, but his right-footed effort from a narrow angle hit the base of the left-hand upright and rebounded into the arms of Ivorian keeper Yahia Fofana. Fofana then made a smart reaction save with his right boot to once again deny Brentford forward Ouattara just after the hour mark, while Amad was denied his second by a similarly fine stop by Koffi. In the end it was teenager Bazoumana Toure who grabbed the third late on with a fine solo goal, racing forward from midway inside his own half and beating Koffi inside the left-hand upright with a clinical finish. Emerse Fae's men will now face record seven-time champions Egypt, who beat Benin 3-1 after extra time on Monday, in a heavyweight last-eight clash in Agadir on Saturday (19:00 GMT).
Adil Boulbina's goal deep into extra time was enough to settle a hard-fought encounter against DR Congo, sending Algeria into the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon). 07 Jan 2026
Played in down the left by fellow substitute Ramiz Zerrouki, Boulbina outpaced a tired-looking Aaron Wan-Bissaka, cut back inside and unleashed an unstoppable right-footed drive that whipped over goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi and went in off the underside of the bar for the only goal of the game. The result, which leaves the Congolese still looking for their first win over Algeria, was harsh on the Central Africans. Having competed throughout an even contest in Rabat they looked to have earned themselves what appeared an inevitable penalty shootout before Boulbina's intervention. In a game of few chances, with defences well on top, France idol Zinedine Zidane was once again in attendance to watch his son Luca keep a fourth clean sheet of the tournament for Les Fennecs. With such a miserly rearguard, the 2019 Afcon champions will fancy their chances of styming their free-scoring quarter-final opponents Nigeria when they meet in Marrakesh on Saturday (16:00 GMT).
