Erling Haaland found the net for a 12th consecutive game to maintain his incredible goalscoring streak and help Manchester City end their winless away run in the Champions League with victory at Villarreal. 22 Oct 2025
Haaland's blistering form has now seen him score 24 goals in 14 games for club and country this season, as City claimed three points on the road in Europe for the first time in over a year. The Norwegian's goal to open the scoring was that of a striker with deadly instincts, darting ahead of marker Juan Foyth and converting a first-time finish from Rico Lewis' low cross. City had opportunities from the off - Haaland headed wide inside two minutes and Jeremy Doku tested Luiz Junior within the first few seconds with a low strike that the home goalkeeper batted away. Pep Guardiola's side dominated the first half and captain Bernardo Silva deservedly doubled the advantage before half-time, planting a free header into the net from Savinho's cross. Villarreal attempted to get back into the game in the second half as Pape Gueye stung the palms of Gianluigi Donnarumma and former Chelsea defender Renato Veiga headed against the post late on, but City emerged victorious.
Harvey Barnes and Anthony Gordon fired Newcastle United to an emphatic victory against Jose Mourinho's Benfica in the Champions League. 22 Oct 2025
The unmarked Gordon opened the scoring in the first half as he calmly sidefooted the ball past Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin at the back post following Jacob Murphy's ball across. It was Gordon's fourth goal in just three games in the competition and gave Newcastle the platform to push for another after the break. Barnes went on to double his side's lead after goalkeeper Nick Pope launched an almighty throw down the right. Benfica defender Antonio Silva misjudged it and Barnes raced through before finishing in-off the upright. There was still time for Barnes to add a third late on after Gordon set up his team-mate, who put the ball through Trubin's legs. Benfica were left to rue what might have been after the visitors twice came close to breaking the deadlock. A strong hand from Pope denied Dodi Lukebakio at his near post before the former Watford forward struck the upright a few minutes later with a whipped effort from outside the box. Gordon and Barnes, however, took their chances as Newcastle recorded back-to-back victories in the Champions League for the first time since 2003.
Holders Paris St-Germain produced a ruthless attacking display to dismantle Bayer Leverkusen 7-2 and make it three wins from three in the Champions League. 22 Oct 2025
Two strikes from Desire Doue, along with goals for Willian Pacho and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, put PSG 4-1 up at the break, before Nuno Mendes, Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha completed the rout. Defender Willian Pacho headed PSG ahead in the seventh minute when he met Nuno Mendes' teasing in-swinging cross, before Leverkusen were awarded a penalty 16 minutes later when Illia Zabarnyi brought down Claudio Echeverri. Alejandro Grimaldo's effort struck the post, however, and seven minutes later Leverkusen captain Robert Andrich had a yellow card upgraded to red by the VAR for elbowing Doue in the face. PSG's numerical advantage lasted all of five minutes though, as Zabarnyi was shown a straight red card for dragging down Christian Kofane in the box. The BayArena crowd roared as Aleix Garcia converted, but their joy was short-lived. In the space of barely five minutes, Doue found the bottom corner with a sharp finish, Kvaratskhelia's first-time strike went in off both posts, and Doue finished a swift counter-attack with a low curling effort. The second half began in a similar vein - Vitinha glided through the Leverkusen midfield and slipped Mendes through on goal to fire past Mark Flekken at his near post. Garcia found the top right corner with an audacious 30-yard strike to pull a goal back for the hosts, before Dembele marked his return from a hamstring injury by tapping in PSG's sixth at the back post just three minutes after coming off the bench. Vitinha complemented his assist for Mendes with a low effort into the bottom corner in the 90th minute. Injury-hit PSG have won just one of their past four Ligue 1 games and have surrendered top spot to Marseille, but those struggles have clearly not followed them into Europe.
Inter Milan continued their perfect start to the Champions League this season with a convincing 4-0 win over Union Saint-Gilloise. 22 Oct 2025
Keen to forget last season's final, where they were thrashed 5-0 by Paris St-Germain, Inter swept Union aside with four different goalscorers and they have now won their opening three matches without conceding a goal. Denzel Dumfries opened the scoring in the 41st minute as he took advantage of a scramble in the Union box to lash home from close range. And Inter doubled their lead just before the break when Lautaro Martinez swept past Kjell Scherpen to finish off a blistering counter-attack and grab his third Champions League goal of the season. Hakan Calhanoglu added a third from the penalty spot after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review showed Kevin Mac Allister - the brother of Liverpool midfielder Alexis - had blocked a header by Martinez with his hand. Moments after missing an open goal, Francesco Pio Esposito redeemed himself as he poked in Ange-Yoan Bonny's cut-back. Belgian side Union had enjoyed a bright start as they forced a goalline clearance from Martinez, while Yann Sommer was needed to stop efforts from Promise David and Mathias Rasmussen in the opening moments. But Inter were clinical with their chances and Cristian Chivu's side find themselves second in the 36-team league phase, level on points with last season's champions PSG and Arsenal. They'll host Kazakh club Kairat Almaty at the San Siro in their next Champions League fixture on 5 November, while 23rd-placed Union will travel to Atletico Madrid on 4 November.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe says Benfica boss Jose Mourinho is a "visionary" as they prepare to meet in the Champions League. 21 Oct 2025
Howe goes head-to-head with the two-time winner of the competition on the touchline in a group game at St James' Park on Tuesday. He rates Mourinho as one of the greatest managers of all time after the former Chelsea, Manchester United, Inter Milan and Real Madrid boss left a "big impact" on him. "He is someone I hugely admire, having come up against him before in the Premier League," Howe said. "As a younger coach, I really admired the teams he built at Chelsea, in particular. "He is definitely a visionary - someone that broke the mould in terms of how you manage and the different ways to do things, and then following his success through different clubs, leagues. Incredible, really, what he's achieved in his career. "It's always a great opportunity for any club to go up against one of his teams. I'm looking forward to the challenge immensely and I think it's going to be a great game." Mourinho considers himself "a little Magpie" on account of his bond with former Newcastle manager Sir Bobby Robson.
