England captain Harry Kane scored a hat-trick as defending champions Bayern Munich began the Bundesliga season by thrashing RB Leipzig.
23 Aug 2025
It took 27 minutes for the hosts to break the deadlock when Michael Olise sent a powerful strike into the far corner after the ball dropped invitingly into his path.
Serge Gnabry was instrumental in the build-up to that goal and also the second five minutes later as the German picked out Luis Diaz after an excellent passing routine.
The Colombian forward rifled an effort in off the underside of the crossbar for his first Bundesliga goal since his summer arrival from Liverpool.
Gnabry's excellence was apparent again for Bayern's third just before the break, tricking the Leipzig defence into thinking he was about to shoot before teeing up Olise instead to thunder home.
Kane got his first of the night in the 64th minute, cutting inside to round off a swift counter-attack and tuck an effort past Peter Gulacsi.
The visitors thought they had a goal back soon after, but substitute Antonio Nusa's goal was disallowed as the ball was rolling when a free-kick in the build-up was taken.
Leipzig's luck only got worse, with Kane whipping an expert effort inside the far post from the edge of the box to add a fifth goal to Bayern's tally.
He sealed a dominant success for his side when he netted his third in the 77th minute, a beleaguered Leipzig defence unable to keep up with Bayern's running, leaving Kane unmarked and able to slot home.
Jean-Philippe Mateta scored Crystal Palace's first European goal as they began their Conference League campaign with a 1-0 victory against Fredrikstad.

The French forward's effort epitomised a game which comprised equal parts dominance and frustration for Palace, with Mateta heading inside the far post after Will Hughes sent a deflected strike back into the box.
Palace were without Eberechi Eze, their FA Cup final match-winner, who is expected to join Arsenal in the coming days.
Their Norwegian opponents were determined but clearly second best, spending the game largely pinned into their defensive third as Palace looked to fashion opportunities.
Fredrikstad's deep line proved troublesome for Palace to break down and, for the most part, restricted the hosts to efforts from outside the box or attacks from wide areas.
Palace's chances were rarely clear-cut openings but they should have scored more, with a deflected effort from Mateta hitting the post in the first half and Daniel Munoz heading against the post in the second half.
There were occasional reminders of the opposition's threat when Fredrikstad tried to hit them on the break, showing more aggression late on, but Palace remained resolute.
Oliver Glasner's Premier League side therefore take a narrow advantage to Norway for the second leg next Thursday, when victory on aggregate would seal their place in the Conference League group stage.
Arsenal move ahead of Spurs in race for £60m Eze.
21 Aug 2025
Eberechi Eze is expected to join Arsenal for £60m after the Gunners reached an agreement in principle to sign the forward from Crystal Palace.
Sources have told BBC Sport that Eze favours a move to Arsenal, with whom he started his youth career, despite north London rivals Tottenham having been in talks to sign him.
A deal for Spurs to sign Eze had been agreed between the clubs earlier on Wednesday after talks lasting 10 days, sources said, but it was not finalised.
Arsenal's offer also includes £8m in add-ons.
The Gunners have concerns over a knee injury sustained by attacker Kai Havertz and Eze, 27, would offer Mikel Arteta a fresh option in advanced areas.
Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner said on Wednesday that Eze would start in Thursday's Uefa Conference League play-off tie against Fredrikstad, along with Liverpool-linked Marc Guehi, as they remain "committed to the team".
Sources have told BBC Sport that Eze wants to join Arsenal before the transfer window closes on 1 September.
Eze had a goal ruled out when Palace began their Premier League campaign with a draw at Chelsea on Sunday.
The England international has an expired release clause in his contract which was worth an initial £60m, plus a further £8m in add-ons.
Palace benefited hugely from Eze's 14 goals across all competitions last season, which included a strike in their 1-0 FA Cup final win against Manchester City.
Eze joined the Eagles from Queens Park Rangers for £19.5m in 2020 and his current deal runs until the summer of 2027.
Manager Brendan Rodgers insists the failure to strengthen Celtic's squad for their Champions League play-off with Kairat was "not my decision" and concedes that he has to "accept where it's at".

The Scottish champions - heavy favourites to progress - were listless in being held to a goalless draw by their Kazakhstan counterparts.
Now they must travel more than 3,500 miles for next Tuesday's second leg, just short of the Chinese border, knowing they need a far better showing if they are to return to the top table of continental competition this season.
Celtic have recruited seven players this summer, paying fees for Benjamin Nygren, Hayato Inamura, Shin Yamada and Callum Osmand, with Kieran Tierney and Ross Doohan arriving on frees and Jahmai Simpson-Pusey on loan.
Only Nygren and Tierney started on Wednesday, while the likes of Nicolas Kuhn and Kyogo Furuhashi - who starred in the Champions League last term - have been sold and not replaced, while Jota is out injured long term.
"We need to improve the squad," Rodgers said. "There's been clarity around that for a long time. Supporters see that. Hopefully between now and the end of the season, the club will get that and that will support us.
A disastrous opening 20 minutes left Rangers' hopes of Champions League qualification hanging by a thread, as a clinical Club Brugge side tormented the hosts inside a seething Ibrox.
20 Aug 2025
After a stuttering start to the season, the lure of Champions League riches offered potential salvation and credit in the bank for new head coach Russell Martin, who remains under scrutiny from many fans after an unconvincing start to the season.
Questions about Rangers' defensive frailties have lingered in recent weeks, and fans' worst fears were realised when three wretched early concessions left the Scottish Premiership shellshocked.
Danilo's second-half tap in gives them a slither of hope for next Wednesday's second leg in Belgium, but their performance levels would need to be hugely improved to give them any chance.
It took just three minutes for Ibrox to be stunned into first silence, then anger, when Nasser Djiga inexplicably failed to deal with a bouncing ball inside his half, allowing Romeo Vermant to race in and dinked over Jack Butland from 30 yards.
A Rangers side already low in confidence were rattled again after seven minutes, when a further lapse in concentration left Jorne Spileers unmarked to sweep in from a corner. The boos were amplified.
