Ange Postecoglou said the "football gods" have deserted his Tottenham side after they were foiled by a goalkeeping masterclass from Eintracht Frankfurt's Kaua Santos. 11 Apr 2025
The Brazilian produced a string of inspired saves in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, to the frustration of Postecoglou and his players. Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike showed why he has caught the attention of several Premier League clubs when he put the visitors ahead inside six minutes with a superb low strike. However, Spurs responded well and took control before Pedro Porro equalised with a bold backheel flick. Tottenham poured forward with intensity after the interval and would have scored had it not been for the woodwork and three big saves from Santos. In a frantic few minutes, Lucas Bergvall and Rodrigo Bentancur both rattled the crossbar, while Son Heung-min and James Maddison each had a curling effort stopped by the goalkeeper. Deep into stoppage time, Santos was the hero for Frankfurt again with a fine fingertip save from Micky van de Ven's bouncing header. "I'm resigned to the fact that the football gods have got their eyes elsewhere this year," Postecoglou said afterwards. "They're obviously busy with other clubs and other managers, so whatever we get we're going to have to do it without them this year." Sitting 14th in the Premier League and out of both domestic cups, the Europa League is Tottenham's only remaining chance of silverware success this season. It also offers the trophy winners a route into the 2025-26 Champions League. Head coach Postecoglou, who is looking to maintain his record of "always winning" trophies in his second season, will need a strong showing from his side when they travel to face Frankfurt in the second leg on 17 April.
Raphinha equalled Lionel Messi's club record for goal involvements in a single Champions League campaign as Barcelona thrashed Borussia Dortmund to take command of their quarter-final tie. 10 Apr 2025
The Brazilian forward scored and assisted twice to reach 19 goal involvements in the competition this term, the same as Messi achieved in the 2011-12 campaign. Raphinha's 12th European goal of the season gave Barcelona a deserved first-half lead, before Robert Lewandowski struck twice after the break and Lamine Yamal added a fourth to put the Spanish side on course for the semi-finals. The hosts ran riot in the early stages and could have scored three times inside the opening seven minutes, with Yamal and Lewandowski forcing Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel into smart saves. Barca's pressure told in the 25th minute, although the goal was a touch fortuitous. Fermin Lopez's free-kick - awarded when Karim Adeyemi pulled the hair of Jules Kounde - found Inigo Martinez at the far post, who headed the ball across the six-yard box. Pau Cubarsi poked the ball towards the far corner past the dive of Kobel, with Champions League top scorer Raphinha just about staying onside for a sliding finish on the line. Dortmund grew into the game as the half progressed, with Adeyemi and Serhou Guirassy going close as the break approached. Lewandowski, though, doubled Barca's lead three minutes after the restart from a yard out, converting Raphinha's header across the face of goal following Yamal's cross to the far post. Dortmund began to struggle as mistakes on the ball gifted the La Liga leaders several more chances. Fermin hit the outside of the post with a fizzing low strike from 16 yards out, before blazing over a rebound a minute later. Lewandowski put the first leg beyond doubt with his 99th goal for the club, finishing off a lightning counter-attack in the 66th minute with a ruthless first-time strike under Kobel. Raphinha matched Messi's record by sliding the ball across for Yamal to finish in the 77th minute following another ruthless break. Barcelona will travel to Germany for the second leg on Tuesday, 15 April.
Nuno Mendes struck deep into stoppage time to give Paris St-Germain a significant advantage against Aston Villa in the Champions League quarter-final first leg at Parc des Princes. 10 Apr 2025
Villa looked like they would only need to overturn a one-goal deficit at Villa Park until Mendes stole in to deliver a devastating blow to Unai Emery's side in the dying seconds. The visitors had stunned the newly crowned French champions when Morgan Rogers arrived at the far post to turn in Youri Tielemans' cross from the left after 35 minutes. That breakaway goal to take the lead delighted an away support that included the Prince of Wales, a Villa supporter since his school days. The lead only lasted four minutes before PSG drew level, however, with Desire Doue leaving Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez helpless with a magnificent curling drive from 20 yards. PSG's brilliant Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia troubled Villa all night, and he put them ahead four minutes after the break when he turned substitute Axel Disasi before drilling a powerful shot high past Martinez at his near post. Villa keeper Martinez, who had few friends in France following his antics at the 2022 World Cup final when Argentina beat Les Bleus in Qatar, made several fine saves on this occasion but was powerless as he was wrong-footed by Mendes in the closing moments. It made it a bitterly disappointing finale for former PSG boss Emery and his Villa side, who were left despondent as the locals celebrated rapturously.
Declan Rice stunned Real Madrid with two brilliant free kicks - the first scored in his career - as Arsenal took a commanding 3-0 first leg lead in their Champions League quarter-final. 09 Apr 2025
Mikel Arteta had asked the Arsenal fans to arrive early to create an impressive atmosphere inside the stadium, and the team responded by starting the game quickly with a number of dangerous crosses into the Madrid penalty area. It took until the 20th minute for Madrid to have their first real chance, when Vinicius Jr curled an effort wide. But Rice took control of the tie for Arsenal in the second half. The Gunners were the better side all evening and took the lead in the 58th minute, when Rice curled the first of two excellent free-kicks round the Real Madrid wall into the corner of the net past Thibaut Courtois. Rice scored his second of the night with a free-kick of equal quality 12 minutes later, bending another long-range effort into the top right-hand corner to leave Madrid stunned. Mikel Merino then made sure it was a memorable night for Arsenal when he curled a shot into the bottom corner from inside the area just five minutes later. Things only got worse for Madrid when Eduardo Camavinga was sent off in stoppage time for picking up a second yellow card. Arsenal have not reached the semi-finals stage of the Champions League since the 2008-09 season, but they have given themselves a huge chance of progressing to the last four with this result.
Inter Milan struck late to put themselves in a strong position to advance into the Champions League semi-finals after winning the first leg of their last-eight tie at Bayern Munich. 09 Apr 2025
The German hosts dominated the opening half hour with England captain Harry Kane curling an effort against the right-hand post, but they fell behind to Inter's first shot on target. The Serie A leaders scored a fine goal at the end of an excellent team move in the 38th minute. Marcus Thuram showed great skill to jump and flick the ball into Lautaro Martinez's path with the Argentine striker firing his effort with the outside of the boot into the roof of the net. However, substitute Thomas Muller levelled in the 85th minute with a goal that looked to have saved Bayern from defeat. The 35-year-old announced last week he would be leaving in the summer, ending a 25-year association with the club, and he finished from close range after Konrad Laimer's low cross. But there was to be another twist with just two minutes left. Inter quickly broke up field and Carlos Augusto's cross was converted by substitute Davide Frattesi to ensure the Italians would leave Germany with a crucial advantage. Defeat also ended Bayern's 22-match unbeaten home run in the Champions League, dating back to 2021. The second leg at the San Siro takes place on Wednesday, 16 April with the overall winners going on to play either Barcelona or Borussia Dortmund in the two-legged semi-final. Bayern's Allianz Arena will stage the final on 31 May.
