Martim Fernandes' freak own goal gifted Nottingham Forest a glorious chance to reach a first European semi-final in over 40 years. 10 Apr 2026
The Porto defender accidentally passed it into his own net from 45 yards with goalkeeper Diogo Gomes stranded, to cancel out William Gomes' early opener. It gave Forest a way back in Portugal just as the hosts threatened to quickly take complete control of the Europa League quarter-final first leg. "It's part of the match, it's part of the game. There was some pressure and some failure in their communication so we ended up scoring," said Forest boss Vitor Pereira. Now, victory at the City Ground - where they have already beaten Porto this season - next Thursday would send Forest into their first European semi-final since 1984. Aston Villa could be waiting for an all-English clash after their 3-1 win in Bologna put them in pole position to progress. Stefan Ortega had already denied Terem Moffi and Borja Sainz before Porto went ahead, William Gomes finishing at the far post, and he saved again from Moffi in first-half injury time. Igor Jesus had a goal disallowed after the break, having collided with the goalkeeper, while Ortega's fine stop denied William Gomes a second. It meant Forest boss Vitor Pereira, who won two titles with Porto, returned to Estadio do Dragao to claim a vital result after making nine changes - including starting Chris Wood, as the striker made his return after six months out. Forest remain in a Premier League relegation battle, sitting three points above the drop zone, with Pereira mindful of Sunday's top-flight visit of Villa. "We changed some players, why? In two and a half days we are playing against Aston Villa and I have to think about it," he said. "If we were certain in the Premier League we would be talking about another match, but I'm pleased with the result, the players gave it their best, they kept it open and we will see what we can do next week. "We are playing to stay in the Premier League and that has to be taken very seriously. I have to be responsible and we have to add points as quickly as possible to escape the last matches and remain in the Premier League."
Aston Villa will take a 3-1 advantage into the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie against Bologna following a hard-fought victory in Italy. 10 Apr 2026
After surviving a string of Bologna attacks, Villa led through a header from Ezri Konsa, which came against the run of play in the dying seconds of the first half, before Ollie Watkins doubled their advantage six minutes into the second. Bologna's English attacker Jonathan Rowe struck with a brilliant curling effort past Emiliano Martinez in the 90th minute before Watkins scored from a corner in injury time to restore their two-goal advantage before the return fixture. But Unai Emery's side were handed two huge reprieves in the first half as they struggled to find a foothold at Stadio Renato Dall'Ara. Rowe was a lively presence on the left wing for the home side and fed Santiago Castro, who saw his effort take a deflection off Konsa on its way into the goal - despite an attempt from Matty Cash to clear it off the line. The Serie A side's 28th-minute opener, however, did not stand, disallowed for a tight offside on Castro after a video assistant referee (VAR) review. Two minute's later, Scotland's Lewis Ferguson's shot hit the crossbar after Rowe's cross. But the Premier League side struck in the 44th minute from a rare corner kick as defender Konsa headed in at the far post with Bologna goalkeeper Federico Ravaglia failing to collect Youri Tielemans' delivery after coming off the line. Watkins then pounced on a mistake by Torbjorn Heggem and finished through the legs of Ravaglia to pull his side further ahead in the 51st minute. Rowe reduced the deficit in the closing stages to give Bologna hope, which was dashed immediately by Watkins' second in the 95th minute as the 1982 European champions took a big step towards a place in the semi-finals.
Liverpool's Champions League hopes are hanging in the balance after a demoralising defeat by reigning European champions Paris St-Germain - their 16th loss of the season. 09 Apr 2026
Desire Doue's deflected strike looped over the head of Giorgi Mamardashvili to give the Ligue 1 leaders the lead, before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia doubled their advantage with a moment of brilliance. It means the Reds, who failed to register an attempt on target, have it all to do to stay in the competition in the quarter-final second leg at Anfield next Tuesday. After suffering a four-goal mauling by Manchester City in their previous game, Liverpool appeared to be on a damage limitation exercise and started with a five-man defence in the French capital. But PSG took the lead in the 11th minute - and dominated throughout - amid another muddled performance by Arne Slot's side that raised more questions than answers. Mamardashvili, standing in for injured first-choice Alisson, was beaten by 20-year-old Doue's finish from inside just the box which took a wicked deflection off Virgil van Dijk and flew over the keeper into the net. Mamardashvili recovered to make some key saves and keep Liverpool in the tie, including a fine one-handed stop to deny Georgia team-mate Kvaratskhelia before repelling Doue after the Reds were carved open. But Liverpool did fall further behind when Kvaratskhelia added PSG's second with a lovely piece of skill after rounding the keeper from Joao Neves' defence-splitting pass. It could have been worse for Liverpool when Warren Zaire-Emery went down after a challenge by Ibrahima Konate - but the penalty decision was overturned after the official watched the incident again on the pitchside monitor. Konate was then fortunate not to be penalised for shoving Nuno Mendes in the area in stoppage time. Ousmane Dembele also missed three glorious chances, the first when he shot straight at Mamardashvili, the second when he blazed over the bar and then when he hit the woodwork after a mistake by Jeremie Frimpong late on. Liverpool sent on Alexander Isak for his first taste of action since December after injury but face an almighty challenge to overturn PSG's advantage in six days' time.
Atletico Madrid took a huge step towards reaching the Champions League semi-finals as they claimed an impressive win at 10-man Barcelona. 09 Apr 2026
The visitors had not won at the Nou Camp since 2006 before Wednesday but goals in either half by Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth secured the win in the first-leg of their quarter-final tie. Barcelona had been the better side for much of the game but a foul on Giuliano Simeone by Pau Cubarsi just before half-time proved pivotal. The defender was initially shown a yellow card by referee Istvan Kovacs after sending Simeone flying as he broke through one-on-one, but that was changed to a red card when Kovacs was asked by the video assistant referee to review the incident on the pitchside monitor. Alvarez then compounded Barcelona's misery by superbly sending the free-kick beyond the goalkeeper's reach and into the back of the net. To Barcelona's credit, they responded well to going a man down and dominated the second half, with Marcus Rashford going closest to equalising when he hit the crossbar from a free-kick. But instead, they were dealt a further blow when Atletico grabbed a second, Alexander Sorloth sweeping home from Matteo Ruggeri's low cross. The defeat leaves Barcelona with it all to do when they travel to Madrid in the second leg next Tuesday.
Harry Kane marked his comeback from injury with a superb strike as Bayern Munich took the advantage in their Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid with an impressive first-leg victory at the Bernabeu. 08 Apr 2026
Kane, watched by England head coach Thomas Tuchel, was back in action following the minor issue that forced him to miss the international friendly against Japan and Bayern's Bundesliga win against Freiburg. The 32-year-old England captain was subdued in the first half, although he was involved in the build-up when former Liverpool forward Luis Diaz gave Bayern a deserved lead with a composed finish four minutes before half-time. Kane then showed his class moments after the restart with a clinical right-foot strike into the bottom corner that gave Real keeper Andriy Lunin no chance. Bayern's veteran keeper Manuel Neuer made four fine saves, including three from Kylian Mbappe, but Vincent Kompany's visiting side could also have scored more in a pulsating encounter. In desperation, and with restlessness sweeping around the stadium, Real brought Jude Bellingham on after an hour as Real tried to mount a fightback - and the midfielder delivered an outstanding cameo. Trent Alexander-Arnold, who had looked uncertain in defence, showed the other side of his game with a superb low cross that was turned in by Mbappe after 74 minutes. Real continued to press but Bayern held out to take a narrow lead to Munich for the second leg.
