Scotland's John McGinn says his "scuffed" goal which downed Haiti in their World Cup opener left him "beaming with pride" - and he hopes kids around the country wake up feeling exactly the same way. 14 Jun 2026
The Aston Villa midfielder's deflected effort in the first half gave Scotland their first World Cup win since 1990 at their first finals since 1998. They sit top of Group C as they aim to reach the knockout stages for the first time ever, despite a nervy second half during which Haiti threatened to equalise. "It wasn't my best of goals but who cares? It's been a long time coming," McGinn told BBC Sport. "I scuffed it a wee bit. "Haiti are a decent team by the way. We had to work hard for it. Could we play a bit better? Aye. But it was a must-win game and we won. I'm absolutely over the moon." Scotland still have to face Morocco and Brazil - two sides with the potential to go far at the World Cup - on Friday 19 June and Wednesday 24 June respectively. Steve Clarke and his side know they will need to improve, but McGinn says they will relish this victory on their return to football's biggest stage. "We've been through a lot of hurt as a country," he said. "A generation of supporters haven't seen this. But the pride on my face this morning seeing all the kids going to the parks in a Scotland kit and painting their faces. "Hopefully when kids get up tomorrow they'll be beaming with pride because I am. It sets things up for Friday [against Morocco]."
Vinicius Jr spared Brazil the embarrassment of defeat in an opening World Cup match for the first since 1934 as his spectacular solo goal earned a draw for the five-time winners against Morocco at the New York New Jersey Stadium. 14 Jun 2026
Brazil fell behind in the 21st minute when Ismael Saibari lifted the ball over the onrushing Alisson Becker from outside the area following a lapse in communication between the Liverpool goalkeeper and his defenders, Gabriel and Marquinhos. It was the first time the African champions had scored against South American opposition at the World Cup, having failed to do so against Peru in 1970 and Brazil in 1998. Morocco continued to dominate and, by the 30th minute, had registered 12 shots - the most Brazil have faced in a World Cup match since their encounter with Mexico in 2018. But as Mohamed Ouahbi's side failed to capitalise on their advantage, Brazil drew level 13 minutes before the break through Vinicius. Making his 50th appearance for the Selecao, he collected a ball from Bruno Guimaraes inside the area, cut inside, and unleashed a fierce strike past Yassine Bounou. Former West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta almost put Brazil ahead in first-half stoppage time, but his acrobatic effort was tipped behind for a corner. With several members of Brazil's triumphant 2002 squad watching on in New Jersey - including Ronaldo, Kaka and Roberto Carlos - Carlo Ancelotti's side began to move through the gears after the break. And although chances were at a premium for both sides, Raphinha came closest to finding an elusive second when he narrowly failed to connect with Guimaraes' low-driven cross across the face of goal. The draw means Morocco's wait to win their opening game at a World Cup goes on, while Brazil's remarkable 92‑year unbeaten first-match record remains intact.
Qatar scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser as they fought back to draw against Switzerland to claim their first-ever point at a World Cup finals. 13 Jun 2026
Boualem Khoukhi headed home Homam El Amin's cross in the 94th minute to spark wild celebrations among Julen Lopetegui's squad. It delivered a remarkable conclusion to a one-sided affair that Switzerland had dominated and had looked likely to be settled by Breel Embolo's first-half penalty. The Switzerland striker fired in after Remo Freuler was clattered by Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada, although television replays appeared to show that the Bologna midfielder had strayed marginally offside in the build-up. At that stage Murat Yakın's side were heading to the top of Group B with tougher tests to come in their next two fixtures against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Canada. However, they were heavily punished for some profligate finishing and a drop in intensity in the closing stages. Nottingham Forest forward Dan Ndoye failed to convert several good opportunities while Ruben Vargas and Embolo also missed gilt-edged chances. And it allowed Qatar, who were outclassed for long periods, to snatch the most unlikely of points.
If there were any doubts that the USA were ready to live up to the pressure of being one of the hosts of the 2026 World Cup, they were dispelled in 45 brilliant minutes against Paraguay. 13 Jun 2026
Following a glitzy build-up which featured a performance from Katy Perry, watched on by Hollywood A-listers like Tom Cruise in the stands and with thousands of fans decked out in the stars and stripes, they would have been forgiven for wilting under the pressure. Instead they stepped up as three goals in a whirlwind first half, before a sublime fourth by Gio Reyna in stoppage time, secured a 4-1 win to ensure a perfect start in Group D. But even before this display there were some who had recognised the potential of a USA side who have developed significantly under ex-Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino over the past 20 months. Former USA goalkeeper Tony Meola is one pundit who has suggested they are now on their way to being able to rub shoulders with football's elite. "Now we are so much more established," said Meola, who was part of the US squad at the 1990, 1994 and 2002 World Cups. "We have players playing all round the world, we have an incredible league and have facilities the world is using right now. Those were a pipe dream a few years ago, now we are a football nation." This was the first time since 1930 that the USA has won a World Cup game by three goals and it is a result that may well make other teams at this tournament sit up and notice. "USA were unbelievable," England great Ellen White said on BBC Match of the Day. "You talk about pressure but they grasped at it, they enjoyed it. They probably shocked the world with that performance."
Canada substitute Cyle Larin made an instant impact as his goal rescued a point for the co-hosts as they began their 2026 World Cup campaign with a draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina. 13 Jun 2026
Southampton striker Larin had only been on the pitch for just over two minutes when he superbly spun away from Tarik Muharemovic and fired past Nikola Vasilj, aided by a slight deflection. It was the first time Canada had avoided defeat in the World Cup finals, after they had been beaten in all three games in 1986 and then again in 2022. Bosnia, who gained penalty shootout wins in the qualifying play-offs over Wales and then Italy to secure their place in North America, took a 21st-minute lead in Toronto. Jovo Lukic grabbed his first goal for his country when he headed in after ex-Arsenal defender Sead Kolasinac had flicked on Ivan Basic's corner. Canada nearly equalised early in the second half as Richie Laryea's shot was going in, only for Kolasinac to produce an excellent clearance by diverting the ball on to the crossbar and away. The hosts pushed for a leveller and had another good opportunity, only for Nikola Katic to clear off the line from Tani Oluwaseyi's goal-bound header. But, in a thrilling end-to-end match, Canada got a deserved equaliser in the 78th minute for their first ever World Cup draw.
