Borussia Dortmund's hopes of reaching the Champions League knockouts automatically suffered a blow as Bodo/Glimt twice fought back to claim a draw. 11 Dec 2025
The result leaves Dortmund on 11 points, two places and a point outside the top eight, while the Norwegian side sit in 32nd after failing to win any of their opening six matches. When Julian Brandt opened the scoring for the hosts from Fabio Silva's pass it looked like being a comfortable evening for Niko Kovac's side, who thrashed Villarreal in their last home outing. However, veteran defender Haitam Aleesami headed in an equaliser for the visitors from a well-worked corner. In the second half former AC Milan striker Jens Petter Hauge again pegged the home side back with a close-range finish after Brandt had re-established Dortmund's lead. While the Bundesliga side were largely dominant, having 22 efforts on goal to Bodo/Glimt's seven, Kjetil Knutsen's side deservedly took the acclaim of a large section of travelling supporters at the final whistle. Prior to kick-off Dortmund legends Dede and Marco Reus were paraded on the pitch, with the former Germany winger announced as a club ambassador. Reus, who now plays for LA Galaxy in the MLS, made over 400 appearances for Dortmund and captained the club for five seasons. Dortmund travel to Tottenham for their next match in Europe's elite club competition on Tuesday, 20 January. Bodo/Glimt host Manchester City on the same evening.
Benfica gave their hopes of reaching the knockout play-off round of the Champions League a big boost as they defeated Napoli to record successive wins in the competition. 11 Dec 2025
Jose Mourinho's Benfica side began the league phase with four defeats in a row but have now followed up victory at Ajax with a home win against the Italian champions. The hosts came close to scoring with two opportunities in the space of 30 seconds but Franjo Ivanovic had a shot parried by Vanja Milinkovic-Savic with Fredrik Aursnes then firing wide when shooting across goal. But Benfica, who had to battle through two qualifying rounds to get into the league phase, took a 20th-minute lead through Richard Rios' flicked effort after Napoli failed to clear a cross into the penalty area. Rios then turned provider as his low cross from the right was superbly diverted into the net at the near post by Leandro Barreiro early in the second half. Napoli pushed to get a goal and a route back into the game but Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay headed wide following a corner after Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin had denied David Neres. The result leaves Napoli 23rd in the 36-team league on seven points, with two-time European champions Benfica two places below them on six points. The sides between ninth and 24th at the end of the league phase will feature in the two-legged knockout play-off round, with both Napoli and Benfica needing to pick up more points to secure their spots. Napoli play at Copenhagen on 20 January and end with a home game against Chelsea on 28 January, while Benfica travel to Juventus on 21 January before entertaining Real Madrid a week later.
European champions Paris St-Germain failed to break down Athletic Club but remain well placed for Champions League progression. 11 Dec 2025
Luis Enrique's side are third, although only one point inside the top eight, while Athletic are 28th and in danger of elimination. PSG dominated the game at San Mames and had most of the clear chances without beating home keeper Unai Simon. Fabian Ruiz fired two good chances over the bar, with Simon making good saves to deny Senny Mayulu on either side of half-time. The best chance came when Bradley Barcola raced through on goal and hammered a shot off the crossbar. And Ruiz almost scored a late winner when he was denied well by Spain team-mate Simon - with Yuri Berchiche clearing off the line. The Bilbao hosts, whose only shot on target came late on through Asier Hierro, sit two points off the knockout phase play-off places.
Atletico Madrid held on to claim a narrow win over PSV in an entertaining Champions League game at Philips Stadion. 10 Dec 2025
Diego Simeone's side went behind early, but goals from Julian Alvarez, David Hancko and Alexander Sorloth gave the visitors a two-goal cushion early in the second half. Substitute Ricardo Pepi pulled one back for PSV late on but despite applying plenty of late pressure, the Dutch side were unable to force an equaliser. Forward Guus Til had put the hosts ahead in the 10th minute, rolling the ball into an empty net after Couhaib Driouech raced clear down the left and unselfishly squared it to give his team-mate a tap-in. But Driouech missed a great chance to double the lead. First he skewed his shot wide, and then bizarrely passed up an even better chance as he tried to play in an offside team-mate rather than going for goal from only eight yards out with only Jan Oblak to beat. Atletico levelled through Alvarez after Giuliano Simeone robbed the seemingly oblivious Yarek Gasiorowski as PSV played a goal-kick short and the defender was caught out. Hancko reacted quickest to slot the ball home when Nahuel Molina's shot was pushed out to put Atletico in front shortly after the break and they extended their advantage when an unmarked Sorloth headed home Pablo Barrios' cross. With five minutes to go, Pepi gave PSV hope when he turned the ball in at the back post from a corner and Peter Bosz's men had the chance to equalise but defender Armando Obispo was unable to force the ball home from close range. The result put Atletico seventh in the table with PSV dropping to 19th place.
Chelsea's hopes of qualifying automatically for the Champions League knockouts were dealt a blow as Atalanta came from behind to win in Bergamo. 10 Dec 2025
Both sides went into this game with identical records in the league phase of this year's tournament, having won three, drawn one and lost one to sit on 10 points. For large parts there was little to separate them in this game, too, although Chelsea got their noses in front in the first half when Joao Pedro turned in Reece James' cross. But Atalanta always looked a threat going forwards, with former Charlton and Everton attacker Ademola Lookman causing problems. James shot wide in the second half but Atalanta upped the pressure and deservedly levelled when ex-West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca headed in a cross. Alejandro Garnacho drove a strong effort straight at the goalkeeper but Atalanta got the winner late on when the Blues defence backed off Charles de Ketelaere, who took full advantage with a driven strike. Chelsea tried to rescue a point late on but a superb save by Marco Carnesecchi denied Pedro. The result means Chelsea drop out of the top eight - the places that qualify automatically for the knockouts - to 11th with two league phase games remaining. Atalanta, meanwhile, leap up to third, three points ahead of the Blues.
