Rayo Vallecano will take a one-goal advantage into the second leg of their Europa Conference League semi-final after a narrow win over Strasbourg. 01 May 2026
In a cagey affair at Estadio de Vallecas a looping header from Brazilian forward Alemao nine minutes into the second half was enough to hand the La Liga side a slender lead for next week's return leg in France. In a first half lacking quality, neither side registered a shot on target as Strasbourg dominated possession. But Rayo Vallecano - appearing at this stage of a European competition for the first time - came quick out of the blocks at the start of the second half and were soon rewarded for their efforts. The La Liga side broke the deadlock in the 54th minute when Alemao met Isi Palazon's corner at the near post to score his third European goal of the season. From there the hosts took control, with Strasbourg - managed by Englishman Gary O'Neil - unable to regain their early momentum. Former Newcastle United defender Florian Lejeune thought he had doubled the lead less than 10 minutes later, only for goalkeeper Mike Penders to claw his header off the line. Palazon and Unai Lopez also tried their luck from distance in the closing stages as Rayo Vallecano pushed for a second goal. The second leg will take place at Stade de la Meinau next Thursday, with the winner facing either Crystal Palace or Shakhtar Donetsk in next month's final in Germany.
A stoppage-time winner from substitute Mario Dorgeles earned Braga a slender 2-1 advantage in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final against Freiburg in Portugal. 01 May 2026
Braga took an eighth-minute lead when Turkish midfielder Demir Ege Tiknaz met Victor Gomez's low cross into the penalty area and poked the ball into the bottom corner. Freiburg took advantage of a collision between two Braga defenders to equalise eight minutes later - Jan-Niklas Beste raced through on goal and squared for Vincenzo Grifo to finish. 2011-12 runners-up Braga lost captain Ricardo Horta to injury midway through the half, but spurned a chance to retake the lead when awarded a penalty for a foul on Gustaf Lagerbielke by Freiburg defender Philipp Lienhart. English referee Anthony Taylor awarded the spot-kick after consulting the pitchside monitor. Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu brilliantly tipped Rodrigo Zalazar's effort around the post, meaning the German has saved six of the past seven penalties he has faced. The visitors, playing in a European semi-final for the first time, looked the more likely to score in the second half, but Dorgeles converted a cutback from the byeline to spark wild celebrations in northern Portugal.
Arsenal and Atletico Madrid scored a penalty each in an incident-packed first-leg draw that leaves their Champions League semi-final in the balance. 30 Apr 2026
Viktor Gyokeres won and scored a spot-kick for the visitors just one minute before the break after he went down under a challenge from David Hancko. But Julian Alvarez levelled the score 11 minutes into the second half with a penalty awarded following a video assistant referee review. Substitute Eberechi Eze thought he had won Arsenal's second penalty late on when he appeared to beat Hancko to the ball inside the area but the decision was overturned after a VAR check. The game started as a cagey affair with neither side looking to give away an advantage. But after Gyokeres put the Gunners in front, Atletico Madrid started the second half by piling on the pressure. Ademola Lookman forced David Raya into a save before Gabriel Magalhaes produced an excellent block to deny Antoine Griezmann from the rebound as the hosts looked for an equaliser. Atletico got a penalty when Marcos Llorente's shot from the edge of the box hit Ben White's leg and then touched his hand. The referee pointed to the spot after a VAR check, with Alvarez slamming the ball into the top corner. Griezmann hit the crossbar before Lookman had a golden chance to score a second for Atletico but the winger could only shoot straight at Raya from close range. The tie is now finely balanced before the two sides meet in the second leg in London next Tuesday.
Paris St-Germain came out on top in a nine-goal thriller against Bayern Munich at the Parc des Princes to take a slim advantage in their Champions League semi-final. 29 Apr 2026
Five goals were scored in a breathless first half before the mayhem continued in the second period when holders PSG began to pull away, opening up a three-goal lead. But Bayern, already crowned Bundesliga champions and pushing for a Treble, cut the deficit to one to set up a scintillating second leg in Munich. As the two top-scoring sides in the competition this year, it was only fitting that the buoyant crowd were treated to such an impressive display of attacking talent in a high-quality encounter. Having fallen behind to Harry Kane's penalty after Luis Diaz drew a foul from William Pacho, PSG showcased their threat to take the lead. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia picked up the ball on the left-hand side and cut onto his right foot to superbly guide a shot into the bottom far corner before Joao Neves' glancing header gave the holders the lead. But a moment of individual brilliance from Michael Olise, jinking past players before hammering the ball beyond Matvey Safonov, put the visitors back on level terms. It seemed a blistering first half would be level at the break but PSG were awarded a controversial penalty in the fifth minute of stoppage time when Alphonso Davies was deemed to have handled the ball in the box. Referee Sandro Scharer was sent to the monitor and subsequently awarded what appeared to be a harsh spot-kick, the ball bouncing off Davies' leg and onto his arm before Ousmane Dembele coolly converted. Bayern returned from the break determined to at least restore parity but were, at times, naive as the French side took control. Kvaratskhelia converted from Achraf Hakimi's dangerous ball before Dembele netted his second at the near post to give the hosts a three-goal cushion. Dayot Upamecano's flicked finish six minutes later was greeted only as a consolation but Diaz's finish into the far corner from Kane's brilliant pass ensured Bayern are still in the tie with the return leg taking place on Wednesday, 6 May. The winners will face Arsenal or Atletico Madrid, who play in Wednesday's semi-final, in the final in Budapest.
Enzo Fernandez's first-half header settled a scrappy FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United at Wembley as Chelsea made a winning start after Liam Rosenior's sacking. 26 Apr 2026
Calum McFarlane was put in interim charge until the end of the season and will now lead Chelsea out against Manchester City on Saturday, 16 May. Leeds' hopes of reaching a first FA Cup final since they lost to Sunderland in 1973 were dashed as they were left to regret missed chances that might have turned a tight game in their favour. Daniel Farke's side had the game's first big opportunity when Brenden Aaronson raced clear from Dominic Calvert-Lewin's touch but Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez made a crucial save with his legs. It proved to be an expensive miss as Chelsea went ahead after 23 minutes, Fernandez meeting Pedro Neto's cross with a firm header to give Lucas Perri no chance. As Chelsea took control, Joao Pedro struck the foot of the post before Leeds finally forced their way into contention after the break. Anton Stach, on at half-time, forced a diving save from Sanchez within seconds, then Calvert-Lewin missed a glorious opportunity when he headed straight at Chelsea's keeper from close range. The closing stages were tense as Chelsea closed out the win, a response to Rosenior's dismissal after only 106 days, and they will now attempt to end a run of losing their past three FA Cup finals.
