Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa believes fan protests at the Bernabeu came from "people who don't like" the club as his side beat Levante to move to within one point of La Liga leaders Barcelona. 18 Jan 2026
Madrid supporters waved white handkerchiefs before kick-off on Saturday and then aimed boos and whistles at players - in particular Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Jr and Federico Valverde - as well as president Florentino Perez. "I know the source of these chants and campaigns. They come from people who don't like Real Madrid," said Arbeloa. "It's a pleasure to have a president who is the most important figure in the history of this club, alongside Santiago Bernabeu. "He has achieved everything, and I know the source of these chants." The former Liverpool and Real Madrid defender - who replaced Xabi Alonso as manager on Monday - was also targeted during the game. Second-half goals from Kylian Mbappe and Raul Asencio helped the 15-time European Cup winners seal a 2-0 victory at the end of a tumultuous week. "I've always respected the Bernabeu, I've been booed a lot too. It wasn't a good week for us, and the fans have the right to express their anger," added Arbeloa. "I don't think booing at Vini will continue. I respect the Bernabeu crowd. Their demands motivate the players to give their best."
Michael Carrick enjoyed the perfect start to his second spell as Manchester United caretaker boss as second-half goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu inflicted massive damage on Manchester City's Premier League title hopes. 18 Jan 2026
After so much recent discontent, this was a day when Old Trafford came alive, leaving Sir Alex Ferguson celebrating in the stands and United fans sarcastically waving off City spearhead Erling Haaland when he was replaced 10 minutes from time. City had goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to thank for keeping his side in the game, with the Italian making a string of superb saves to deny Dorgu, Amad Diallo, Casemiro and Mbeumo. But even Donnarumma was powerless to prevent United going in front as skipper Bruno Fernandes led a surging counter-attack and fed Mbeumo to his left before the Cameroon forward, returning from Africa Cup of Nations duty, applied the finish. Eleven minutes later, United doubled their lead as City defender Rico Lewis was caught flat-footed, allowing Dorgu to nip in front of him and turn home Matheus Cunha's cut-back. United had three goals disallowed for offside and Diallo hit the post late on but with Haaland extending his run to one goal in seven games, City didn't look like mounting a comeback. As United's fans paid homage to Carrick, City boss Pep Guardiola slumped in his dug-out as his side's run without a Premier League win extended to four games, opening the door for Arsenal to strengthen their grip on the title. However briefly, United move up to fourth, something they failed to do so often under Ruben Amorim, leaving Carrick to celebrate with his new coaching team at the end.
Marcus Edwards scored a second-half equaliser as Liverpool were held to a frustrating Premier League draw by struggling Burnley at Anfield. 18 Jan 2026
Florian Wirtz gave Arne Slot's side the lead in the first half with an emphatic strike, 10 minutes after Dominik Szoboszlai had hit the bar from the penalty spot. Liverpool dominated possession throughout but failed to take their chances, with the hosts having 32 shots and Burnley keeper Martin Dubravka making eight saves. And Edwards punished the home side with a superb finish past Alisson in the 65th minute after he was played through by Florentino Luis. Liverpool pushed hard for a late winner but could not find a second goal and this will go down as two points dropped against a side who are 19th in the table. Saturday's result extended the Reds' unbeaten run to 12 games in all competitions, although this was a fourth straight league draw. A point takes Liverpool one clear of Manchester United in fourth, but Slot's side missed the chance to cut the gap to second-placed Manchester City and Aston Villa in third to five points. Burnley remain winless in their past 13 league games but this draw would have felt like a win. The Clarets are still deep in the relegation zone but a point at Anfield could do wonders for their confidence.
Ousmane Dembele scored twice as Paris St-Germain moved back to the top of Ligue 1 with a confident victory over Lille. 17 Jan 2026
The French forward opened the scoring early on with a fine strike, curling a low effort into the corner of the net from 20 yards. Dembele notched a spectacular second at the Parc des Princes just after the hour mark with an audacious chip from just inside the box. Bradley Barcola added a third in injury time after capitalising on a mix-up in the Lille defence. Dembele won the Ballon d'Or last season but has suffered an injury-hit campaign. PSG coach Luis Enrique said despite the 28-year-old's impressive attacking display he still needs to contribute in other areas of his game. "Everyone will say that Ousmane is the best player but for me, no, we still need to see the best version of Ousmane defensively," Enrique said. "Because we need a player like him with a defensive mentality. He showed that last year and this year, he needs to continue that." PSG are two points above Lens, who will return to the Ligue 1 summit should they beat Auxerre on Saturday.
Morocco will look to end a 50-year wait for their second continental title when they face Senegal in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday. 17 Jan 2026
But the Atlas Lions will also be looking to garner the ultimate return for their country's huge investment in footballing infrastructure. The game in Rabat (19:00 GMT) pits the continent's top two teams against one another, with the North Africans ranked 11th in the world and the Teranga Lions eight places below them. "We are waiting for this trophy for 50 years now," Morocco defender Romain Saiss told the BBC World Service. "It's been a long time for everyone in the country. It's the dream of all Moroccans." Morocco boast the best defence at the finals, with five clean sheets and the only goal conceded by Yassine Bounou coming from the penalty spot, but will face a stern examination from a Senegal side which has scored 12 times en route to booking their place at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium. The West Africans are also bidding for their second Afcon crown, having claimed their maiden trophy at the 2021 edition in Cameroon. As well as the glory and the chance to call themselves the best team on the continent, the champions will pick up $10m in prize money - an increase of $3m from the last tournament. Meanwhile, for the fourth edition in a row the winners will be coached by an African, with Morocco's Walid Regragui or Senegal's Pape Thiaw emulating Djamel Belmadi (Algeria, 2019), Aliou Cisse (Senegal, 2021) and Emerse Fae (Ivory Coast, 2023).
