England overcame stubborn resistance from Andorra to record a fourth successive victory under head coach Thomas Tuchel in World Cup qualifiers. 06 Sep 2025
In what was effectively an encounter of defence against attack, England once again laboured for long periods before finally making their quality count against the minnows ranked 174th in the world. Tuchel gave a debut to Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, who was one of the more impressive performers in a largely drab encounter at Villa Park. England broke the deadlock after 25 minutes when Andorra defender Christian Garcia headed Noni Madueke's cross past keeper Iker Alvarez into his own net. Andorra's defensive ranks held firm, helped by keeper Alvarez when he saved superbly from Anderson, until Declan Rice headed in Reece James' fine cross at the far post after 67 minutes. England now move on to what will be the toughest test of Tuchel's reign so far when they face Serbia in Belgrade on Tuesday.
Germany suffered a surprise defeat away to Slovakia in their opening World Cup qualifier in Bratislava. 05 Sep 2025
David Hancko gave the hosts the lead three minutes before half-time, running from his own half before playing a one-two with David Strelec, and finishing past visiting keeper Oliver Baumann. Middlesbrough forward Strelec added the second when he bamboozled Antonio Rudiger 10 minutes after the restart with some tidy footwork before curling a shot into the top corner. This was only the fourth World Cup qualifier Germany have ever lost. Liverpool's Florian Wirtz and new Newcastle signing Nick Woltemade were both in Julian Nagelsmann's side, but the visitors were disappointing in attack. Northern Ireland won 3-1 in Luxembourg in Group A's other game and visit Germany next on Sunday (19:45 BST). The six four-team World Cup qualifying groups are starting this week, with six five-team groups having started earlier this year. The top team from each group qualify for the World Cup, with the runners-up going into play-offs. Elsewhere, Spain won 3-0 in Bulgaria in their opening Group E fixture with goals from Mikel Oyarzabal, Marc Cucurella and Mikel Merino. In Group G, a late Matty Cash strike gave Poland a 1-1 draw away to the Netherlands, who opened the scoring through Denzel Dumfries. And Belgium won 6-0 in Liechtenstein in Group J, with Wales beating Kazakhstan 1-0 earlier in the day.
Gianluigi Donnarumma (left) and James Trafford will battle to be Manchester City's first-choice goalkeeper. 02 Sep 2025
Manchester City's late dip into the transfer market for a new goalkeeper on deadline day underlines the fact these are worrying times for manager Pep Guardiola and his team. Summer signing James Trafford has started all three games so far this season and was one of a few City players who came out of Sunday's defeat at Brighton with any credit, but the Englishman is now likely to be consigned to the substitutes' bench following the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma. With Ederson sold to Fenerbahce, City and Guardiola pounced with hours remaining to bring in the Italy international from Paris St-Germain for £26m in an attempt to revitalise a squad that is flagging in the early part of the campaign. City started the Premier League season with a thumping 4-0 win at Wolves, but have since suffered back-to-back defeats against Tottenham and the Seagulls. "When we conceded the goal, we stopped playing," Guardiola said of City's late capitulation on the south coast on Sunday, letting slip a 1-0 lead for a 2-1 defeat by conceding in the last minute. Now Guardiola has turned to Donnarumma to try to help fix his team's issues, taking their summer spending to more than £180m.
Galatasaray sign Man City's Gundogan on free transfer. 02 Sep 2025
Galatasaray have signed experienced German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan from Manchester City on a free transfer. The 34-year-old has agreed a deal until the end of the 2026-27 season with the Turkish champions. Gundogan had a year left on his City contract but was allowed to leave with the Turkish transfer window open until 12 September. "Manchester City will always hold a special place in my heart," said Gundogan, who played 358 games for City, scoring 65 goals. "We have enjoyed so much success in our time together and there have been so many unforgettable moments, not least being captain for the Treble-winning season. "To win the Premier League and FA Cup trophies meant so much to me, but to then be afforded the opportunity of lifting the Champions League trophy for this club for the first time, especially in Istanbul, will live with me forever. "I have no doubts Manchester City will enjoy much more success in the future and I will certainly be watching on from afar as I continue my career in Turkey, a country that means ever such a lot to me." Gundogan was Pep Guardiola's first signing for City in 2016 and spent seven years there before he joined Barcelona on a free transfer in 2023. He rejoined City in August 2024 and made 33 appearances in the Premier League last season as Guardiola's side finished third. Gundogan, who was born in the German city of Gelsenkirchen to Turkish parents, won the Premier League five times at City as well as the Champions League in 2022-23. He previously played for Bochum, Nuremberg and Borussia Dortmund. "Ilkay Gundogan is a name synonymous with success at Manchester City," said City director of football Hugo Viana. "We will never forget his legacy here."
Liverpool agree British record £125m fee for Isak. 01 Sep 2025
Liverpool have agreed a British transfer record fee of £125m to sign Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak. Sources close to the deal say an agreement has been reached to bring the Sweden international to Anfield. Isak is expected to undergo a medical on Monday before signing a six-year deal. Liverpool had an initial bid of £110m rejected in August but are now set to land their first target of the summer. The long-running saga for the 25-year-old looks set to end on the final day of the summer transfer window and it follows Newcastle signing striker Nick Voltemaid from Stuttgart last week. Liverpool have already broken their club transfer record this summer by signing German attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz in a deal worth an initial £100m, with a further £16m in add-ons. Isak's arrival would exceed that outlay. Having also brought in Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremy Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecci and Giovanni Leoni, the deal will bring the club's cost to around £416m excluding additional fees.
