Crystal Palace will have to win a two-legged knockout phase play-off in February if they are to advance to the last 16 of the Conference League after drawing with KuPS at Selhurst Park. 19 Dec 2025
With Palace kicking-off at Leeds less than 48 hours after the end of this game, boss Oliver Glasner fielded a mixture of fringe players and youngsters for the must-win match against the Finnish champions. Sixteen-year-old Joel Drakes-Thomas became the the youngest Englishman to play in Europe's third-tier competition, while Dean Benamar, 17, and George King, 18, also made their senior debuts. And all seemed to be going well when Christantus Uche sent Palace into a fifth-minute lead with a lovely curling finish with the outside of his boot. That sent Palace, who started the day in ninth in the table, up into third - and an automatic last-16 place. However, last season's FA Cup winners conceded two goals in the space of three second-half minutes early in the second half. Former Charlton forward Piotr Parzyszek equalised from 12 yards in the 50th minute before Ibrahim Cisse put the visitors ahead for the first time. Justin Devenny made it 2-2 with a 76th-minute header after the visitors had been reduced to 10 men when Clinton Antwi was shown a straight red card for a foul on substitute Will Hughes. But Palace could not find and winner - and must now negotiate a two-legged play-off after finishing 10th in the table. They will meet Czech Republic side Sigma Olomouc or Zrinjski Mostar, who play in Bosnia-Herzegovina, in the play-off. The draw takes place on 16 January.
Aberdeen finished second-bottom of the Uefa Conference League table as their disappointing campaign concluded with a three-goal loss at Sparta Prague. 19 Dec 2025
First-half strikes from John Mercado and Lukas Haraslin put the hosts two goals to the good in a game in which the Scottish Premiership side only had pride to play for. And former Newcastle and Hearts forward Garang Kuol made it three after the break. It took until the 50th minute for Aberdeen to have their first shot at goal - Adil Aouchiche bending past the far post from the edge of the box - and they didn't have a single shot on target on a night when they were firmly second best. Jimmy Thelin's side finish the league stage with two points from six matches, albeit they have played five of the top eight sides in the competition.
Dundee United piled more pressure on Wilfried Nancy as they came from behind to condemn the Frenchman to a fourth straight defeat since becoming Celtic manager on another day of turmoil for the reigning Scottish champions. 18 Dec 2025
Celtic looked to have responded positively to Sunday's League Cup final defeat thanks to Daizen Maeda's early goal, but second-half strikes from Krisztian Keresztes and Zac Sapsford turned the game in the struggling hosts' favour. As eighth-placed United ended a seven-game run without a victory and an 11-year, 24-match wait for a win over the Glasgow side, Nancy becomes the first Celtic manager to have lost four games in a row since Jock Stein 47 years ago. They remain six points behind Premiership leaders Hearts - albeit with a game in hand - on a day when Peter Lawwell announced he would be standing down as chairman citing "abuse and threats" from elements of their own their fans.
Rayan Cherki's thunderbolt strike helped Manchester City overcome Brentford to reach the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup. 18 Dec 2025
City, who had not reached the last four of the competition since claiming a fourth triumph in a row in 2021, will face Newcastle in a two-legged semi-final. Brentford started brightly but could not capitalise and were then reliant on stand-in goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson to push away a rising effort from Cherki. Having had a sighter at goal, the Frenchman gave City the lead just after the half hour mark. The forward picked the ball up on the edge of the box, cut on to his right foot before unleashing an unstoppable effort high into the top corner of the net. Before the goal, Brentford were left incensed when Abdukodir Khusanov received only a yellow card for tripping Kevin Schade close to the edge of the box. The visiting players argued their striker was through on goal but with no video assistant referee (VAR) in operation, the on-field decision from Sam Barrott stood. Nico O'Reilly long range strike in the second half was straight at Valdimarsson, while at the other end Kristoffer Ajer's arrowed drive was brilliantly pushed away at full stretch by James Trafford. And City sealed progression in the next round as Savinho's deflected strike on 67 minutes looped over Valdimarsson and landed in the net to leave them one step away from another trip to Wembley.
Teenager Lewis Miley scored a dramatic late winner as holders Newcastle United beat Fulham to reach the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup. 18 Dec 2025
The quarter-final looked to be heading for penalties after Fulham midfielder Sasa Lukic's header cancelled out Yoane Wissa's opener at St James' Park. But Miley headed home at the near post from Sandro Tonali's stoppage-time corner as Newcastle got back to winning ways following a damaging derby defeat against Sunderland on Sunday. The 19-year-old midfielder stepped up when Newcastle needed him most, having selflessly filled in at right-back because of injuries to Kieran Trippier, Lewis Hall, Dan Burn and Tino Livramento, who hobbled off on Wednesday night. Miley, in the process, gave Eddie Howe a crucial and much-needed victory on a night supporters repeatedly sang the name of the head coach. The youngster was one of five players who kept his place from the weekend as Howe made six changes to his side. Wissa was one of those who came into the team and he quickly made an impression on his first start since recovering from a knee injury and, indeed, since completing his protracted £55m move from Brentford in the summer. Although Benjamin Lecomte got a hand to Jacob Murphy's first-time cross, the Fulham goalkeeper merely knocked the ball into the path of Wissa, who bundled it into the net from close range. However, shaky Newcastle were not ahead for long as Antonee Robinson ghosted into space between Murphy and Miley out wide and picked out the unmarked Sasa Lukic, who powered a header past Aaron Ramsdale. Lecomte later punched away a swerving effort from Bruno Guimaraes and was kept busy, getting down to parry a low drive from Harvey Barnes and making a fine late save to claw away Miley's shot. But Miley rose to head home from the corner that followed to send Newcastle into a third EFL Cup semi-final in four seasons, where Manchester City await them.
